Also including major modern works by Lloyd Rees, John Perceval, John Brack, Charles Blackman alongside an important group of International works including Bridget Riley and Jehangir Sabavala.

Sir Arthur Streeton’s Settlers Camp, 1888 (estimate: $1,000,000 – 1,500,000),  is one of three extremely important works by the artist to be offered at Deutscher and Hackett’s first Fine Australian and International Art auction for 2012.  When it was purchased for $800,000 in 1985 by Robert Holmes à Court it fetched the all time record price for an Australian painting at auction.  Painted in the centenary year of 1888 at the Box Hill artists’ camp, Settler’s Camp embodies the true pioneering spirit of the Australian bushman which forged our national identity at the time. Please find attached further information and an image of this important painting.

Also on offer is Sirius Cove, 1895 (estimate: $250,000 – 350,000), painted seven years later in the same year that Banjo Patterson penned the lyrics for “Waltzing Matilda”, perfectly depicts that other famed artist camp of Streeton and Tom Roberts located at Little Sirius Cove, Mosman.

The Harbour from Mosman, 1926 ($350,000 – 450,000),painted in the new century rounds out the group and displays Streeton’s great love of Sydney and the optimism he found there in the bright sunshine and light of the city and its bustling harbour life. One of the largest paintings of Sydney harbour ever painted by Streeton, this grand painting has been held in the one family’s collection since the 1930s.

This auction also offers a significant selection of major modern works including  John Perceval’s, Wheatfield and Potato Diggers, (estimate: $250,000 – 350,000),which the artist first began in 1947 and was left under a friend’s bed until Perceval retrieved and completed it in 1968.  This picture illustrates the cover of the Perceval book by Margaret Plant.  Further important modern works include a Lloyd Rees, Tuscany, (estimate: $180,000 – 220,000)painted from his favourite pension in San Gimignano in 1957 and a major early Charles Blackman, Alice (estimate: $160,000 – 200,000) of the same year.  Again we are pleased to offer a significant John Brack painting, this time from the battle series, “U” and “I” (estimate: $500,000 – 600,000)painted between 1983-84.

Deutscher and Hackett have been entrusted to sell a diverse group of International works including Green Surrounded by Violet and Orange, 1969 (estimate: $80,000 – 120,000) by the world’s leading proponent of Op Art, Bridget Riley.  In addition there are two important early paintings by the Indian master, Jehangir Sabavala, The Water Pump, Jaipur c1955 (estimate: $80,000 – 120,000) and The Bundi Courtyard c1957 (estimate: $30,000 – 40,000), both purchased in Mumbai in the 1960s by the late Sir Kenneth Wills.  We are also pleased to include another important work by Vladimir Tretchikoff, Clowns of 1969 (estimate: $30,000 – 40,000), which was purchased by its current owner from the Kendal Milne department store in Manchester, United Kingdom.

We are committed to continue our support of contemporary and emerging Australian artists on the secondary market and we are pleased to include an excellent group of works in this category.  Included among these works are a Kathryn Del Barton of 2004, Come Forth with Love (estimate: $100,000 – 140,000)and a monumental Tim Maguire (estimate: $70,000 – 90,000) flower painting from 2005.  Additional works by Rosalie Gascoigne, Howard Arkley, Peter Booth, Bill Henson, Stephen Bush, Brent Harris and Guan Wei present a strong contemporary offering.
