Rusty Peters was born on Springvale Station, under a Supplejack tree, southwest of Warmun (Turkey Creek). He is a senior Gija man of the Juwurru skin and learned in traditional Law.
Peters worked as an assistant at Warringarri Aboriginal Arts after moving to Kununurra in 1989. He began to produce work at Waringarri, mainly prints and some paintings, but it wasn't until 1997 when Freddie Timms established Jirrawun Aboriginal Arts Corporation that he produced larger canvases. Peters exhibited in many group and solo exhibitions with leading Australian galleries.
'His detailed knowledge of the land and stories from Springvale and neighbouring Moolabulla stations is reflected in distinctive paintings in traditional red and yellow ochres and black charcoal. While his work is recognizably in the 'Turkey Creek' style, the intricate curves which map the county and the dark caves and rivers are particular to his work.'1
