Catalogue text

Lilly Kelly Napangardi was born at Haasts Bluff around 1948 and moved to Papunya when it was established in 1960. While living at Papunya during the 1980s she began painting for Papunya Tula Artists Pty Ltd, winning the Northern Territory Art Award in 1986. She later moved to Mt Leibig approximately 300 kilometres north-west of Alice Springs and is now a senior law woman at the Watiyawanu community. This painting depicts her predominant subject, sandhills, and how they are affected by the desert environment. This constant change and movement is captured by the artist with fine dotting and line work depicting a pattern of lines and striations down the surface of the sandhill, the result of water run-off, wind or the movement of animals.
