Catalogue text
Awelye, body painting and women's ceremonial lines are applied to the skin as a part of, not a precursor to ceremony. Applied to the upper torso, arms and thighs whilst the song line is sung, stanza by stanza, the lines are melded onto skin plied with Emu oil. In this work, Awelye Lines, we see a linear statement derived from Awelye, and a clear depiction of the symbolism and ritual of ceremony.
