August 2014 Auction Results Summary

The auction realised $6.7 million with high clearance rates of 93% by value and 82% by volume.

The 143 lot sale included a wide and interesting range of high quality local consignments, many being offered at auction for the first time. Of particular note, a new auction record was set for the late Jeffrey Smart with the sale of Self Portrait at Papini's for a record $1.26 m (including buyer's premium).

This result demonstrated the competitive nature of the market at the high end, with strong demand for major works of exceptional quality. Deutscher and Hackett's growing reputation for successfully handling the sale of significant international works of art in Australia was confirmed with several outstanding results for School of London and modern British works. Amongst these, Frank Auerbach's powerful portrait of David Landau Seated 1992 attracted numerous local and overseas bids with a final result of $720,000 (including buyer's premium).
